The Thing Most Worth Living For

...the longer I live and the more experience I have of the world, the more I am convinced that, after all, the one thing that is most worth living for—and dying for, if need be—is the opportunity of making some one else more happy and more useful.
— Booker T. Washington

An Artist

He who works with his hands is a laborer. He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist.

The Non-Doing Paradox

It reeks of paradox. The only way you can do anything of value is to have the effort come out of non-doing and to let go of caring whether it will be of use or not. Otherwise self-involvement and greediness sneak in and distort your relationship to the work, or the work itself, so that it is off in some way, biased, impure, and ultimately not completely satisfying, even if it is good. Good scientists (and artists) know this mind state and guard against it because it inhibits the creative process and distorts one’s ability to see connections clearly.
— Jon Kabat-Zinn

insist on yourself

Insist on yourself; never imitate. Your own gift you can present every moment with the cumulative force of a whole life’s cultivation; but of the adopted talent of another you have only an extemporaneous half possession... Do that which is assigned to you, and you cannot hope too much or dare too much.
— Ralph Waldo Emmerson, Self-Reliance

collecting beach wood

Photographing my jewelry has become one of my favorite parts of the jewelry making process. In the beginning, I was quite overwhelmed by it, which was funny, because I love taking pictures...

spring rains

We've been wearing these a lot around here in the Northwest. Spring is here and it is quite rainy. But that also means it is lush and green and flowers are blooming! There is inspiration everywhere; I can't keep up with all the ideas I am sketching!
